Dry Van Truckload
The 53-foot dry van is the default unit of North American freight. Because it is the default, the difference between a good dry van programme and an expensive one is almost never the equipment — it is how well the trailer is filled and how little it waits.
Will It Cube Out or Weight Out?
A standard 53-foot van gives roughly 3,900 cubic feet of usable space and a legal payload near 45,000 lb. Divide one by the other and you get the break-even density: at about 11 to 12 pounds per cubic foot, a trailer fills and reaches its weight limit at the same moment. Lighter than that and you cube out with weight to spare; heavier and you weight out with the nose of the trailer still empty.
Floor space is the other constraint. A 53-foot van holds 26 standard 48×40 GMA pallets loaded straight in two rows, or up to 30 if they can be pinwheeled — turned alternately to use the full interior width. Whether pinwheeling is possible depends on your pallet footprint and whether the receiver will accept it, which is worth confirming before you build the load plan around the higher number.
| Measure | Typical 53' Dry Van |
|---|---|
| Interior length | approx. 52'6" |
| Interior width | 98"–101" (plate wider than sheet & post) |
| Interior height | 108"–110" |
| Rear door opening | approx. 98" W × 105" H |
| Usable cube | approx. 3,900 cu ft |
| Legal payload | 44,000–45,000 lbs |
| Pallet positions | 26 straight / up to 30 pinwheeled |
Operational Safeguards
Trailer Condition Checked to Spec
Dry does not mean clean. We specify swept floors, no odour transfer, no nail heads or protruding hardware, and a leak-free roof — the four conditions that generate most food-grade and retail rejections.
Axle Weight, Not Just Gross
A trailer can be under 80,000 lb gross and still be illegal on the drives or tandems. Dense freight loaded to the nose is the usual cause, and it is caught at a scale, not at your dock. We plan weight distribution with the shipper on heavy loads.
Load Securement Inside the Box
Enclosed does not mean secured. Load bars, straps, airbags or e-track keep pallets from walking in the last twenty feet of empty trailer. We agree what is required at booking so the driver carries it.
Where Dry Van Capacity Tightens
Dry van rates are seasonal in a fairly predictable way. Spring produce season pulls reefer capacity out of the market and drags van rates up with it, particularly out of California, Florida and South Texas. Retail peak in the fourth quarter tightens capacity into distribution hubs, and severe weather does the same thing overnight in the upper Midwest and Northeast. Lanes into freight-consuming regions pay more than lanes out of them, which is why a round trip almost never prices as two equal legs.
Two programme structures blunt most of that volatility. Dedicated lanes commit consistent weekly volume to a known carrier at a known rate. Drop trailer programmes leave a trailer at your dock so loading happens on your schedule instead of during a two-hour appointment window — which removes detention as a line item and makes your freight materially more attractive to carriers.
| Programme | Best When |
|---|---|
| Spot truckload | Volume is irregular or the lane is new |
| Contract / dedicated lane | Consistent weekly volume on a repeating origin–destination pair |
| Drop trailer (live drop & hook) | Loading is slow, unpredictable, or outside dock hours |
| Team dry van | Transit must beat a single driver's hours-of-service limits |
What Makes a Load Cheap to Move
Wide Appointment Windows
A load that can be picked up any time on Tuesday draws far more carrier interest than one with a fixed 08:00 slot. Flexibility at the origin is usually worth more than any negotiating tactic.
Fast Turns at Both Ends
Detention is priced into the next quote whether or not it is invoiced. Docks that load in under two hours earn a reputation among carriers, and that reputation shows up as lower rates.
Accurate Weight and Count
A load tendered at 38,000 lb that turns out to be 46,000 lb may need a different truck entirely. Accurate figures at tender time prevent a re-book at spot rates on the day of pickup.
Price a Lane or Build a Programme
Send a single load or a full lane list. We will come back with rates and, where the volume supports it, tell you which lanes are worth contracting instead of buying on the spot market.
