Expedited & Hot Shot
Expedited freight is not ordinary freight moved faster. It is a different product: exclusive use of the vehicle, no terminal, no cross-dock, no second stop, and a driver who leaves for your pickup the moment the load is covered.
What a Deadline Actually Costs
Federal hours-of-service rules set the ceiling on how far one driver can go. A property-carrying driver may drive up to 11 hours, but only within a 14-hour window that starts when they come on duty, and only after 10 consecutive hours off. In practice that puts a solo driver somewhere around 550 to 600 miles in a day. A 900-mile lane therefore takes a solo driver two days no matter how much you pay.
Teams break that ceiling. With two drivers alternating, the vehicle keeps moving while one rests, which puts 1,000 to 1,200 miles a day within reach and turns that same 900-mile lane into an overnight run. This is the real decision in expedited freight: whether your deadline needs a faster vehicle or a second driver. Usually it is the second driver.
| Vehicle | Typical Payload | Best Suited For |
|---|---|---|
| Cargo van / Sprinter | up to approx. 3,500 lbs | 1–3 pallets, small line-down parts |
| Straight truck (liftgate) | approx. 12,000–15,000 lbs | 8–12 pallets, no dock at either end |
| Hot shot (dually + gooseneck) | approx. 16,000 lbs | Open-deck urgency — oilfield, machinery |
| Team tractor-trailer | up to approx. 44,000 lbs | Full truckload that must run non-stop |
Operational Safeguards
Exclusive Use, Confirmed
Expedited means your freight is the only freight on the vehicle. No consolidation, no route deviation for a second shipper, no transfer at a terminal — the vehicle that collects is the vehicle that delivers.
Deadhead Priced Honestly
Most of an expedited quote is often the cost of getting an empty vehicle to your door. We tell you where the nearest suitable unit actually is rather than quoting from an origin the truck is not sitting at.
Check Calls Against the Clock
Time-critical loads are tracked against the delivery appointment, not against a generic schedule. If the run starts slipping, you hear it from us early enough to act on it.
When Expedited Is the Cheap Option
Expedited freight looks expensive per mile and frequently is not, because the comparison is never against standard freight — it is against the cost of the thing that stops. An automotive assembly line that goes down waits on a single fascia or wiring harness. A construction crew stands idle waiting on a replacement hydraulic pump. A retailer misses a promotional on-sale date and eats the markdown. Against those numbers, a dedicated sprinter run overnight is rarely the largest figure on the page.
The pattern repeats across industries: emergency machine parts and line-down automotive components, aerospace ground support and AOG parts, medical devices and clinical trial materials, oilfield tools and drilling components, trade show and event build materials with a fixed opening date, and recovery shipments after a missed connection somewhere upstream.
| Tell Us | Because It Determines |
|---|---|
| The hard deadline, with time zone | Solo versus team, and whether the run is feasible at all |
| Ready time at origin | Which units can reach you before the clock starts |
| Piece dimensions and weight | Vehicle class — a van is far cheaper than a truck |
| Dock or no dock, both ends | Whether a liftgate and pallet jack are required |
| Site access hours | Whether an overnight arrival can actually be received |
Avoidable Expedited Costs
Freight Not Ready on Arrival
The clock and the meter both start when the vehicle is dispatched. A unit waiting at your dock for packaging to be finished is the most common and most avoidable cost in expedited work.
Receiver Closed on Arrival
An overnight team run that arrives at 04:00 to a site that opens at 07:00 has bought three hours of nothing. We check receiving hours before recommending a team.
Booking Bigger Than Needed
Two pallets do not need a tractor-trailer. Accurate dimensions routinely move a quote down a whole vehicle class, and that is the largest single lever on an expedited rate.
